Conditions - Autoimmune Disease - Rheumatoid arthritis

Patrick Massey MD, PhD  ALT-MED Medical and Physical Therapy, Elk Grove Village Il and serving the Chicago area
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that results in inflammation of the synovial joints but can affect many tissues and organs.  The chronic inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis results in the destruction of cartilage and deformity of the joint.  Rheumatoid arthritis can affect the lungs, heart, eyes and other tissue.

About one percent of the world's population has rheumatoid arthritis.  Women are affected more often than men, often beginning in mid 40's. It can be a serious, painful and disabling condition resulting in significant reduction in daily function.  There is a genetic link with the gene HLA-DR4 and others…but it is not 100%.

There is data to support the idea that rheumatoid arthritis may be triggered by bacterial and viral infections.  Some have hypothesized that food allergies may also trigger rheumatoid arthritis, but this needs more research.  It has also been hypothesized that good bacteria in the bowel may have a role at preventing rheumatoid arthritis.

The traditional medical therapy for rheumatoid arthritis has changed dramatically over the pst few decades.  Pain medications include nonsteroidal and steroids.  Disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS) suppress the immune system and prevent long term joint damage and disability and the newer biologic – based drugs can be effective.
Complementary and alternative therapies may help.
  • Tai chi movements can reduce pain, increase range of motion, strength and balance.  ALT-MED physical therapy comes from martial art exercises like those in tai chi.
  • Proper nutrition may reduce pain – resulting in increased range of motion

  • Acupuncture can reduce pain and enhance function and range of motion.  Electroacupuncture is especially beneficial
  • Leaky gut syndrome (click here) may increase symptoms…ALT-MED approach to correcting leaky gut syndrome is very successful
  • Massage increases blood flow, relaxes tissues, reduces pain and increases function
  • Select vitamins, dietary supplements and herbs can reduce inflammation and pain and may improve immune function

2 different chiropractors and the sports medicine physician with physical therapy did not provide relief from constant back pain. After the sessions with Dr. Massey, there was, as he promised, major improvement and I put away the cane I was using. The program works!
