Medical Tai Chi© is an unique program, specifically for patients who are undergoing chemo- and radiation therapy.
It was developed by Patrick Massey MD, PhD (Medical Director, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Alexian Brothers Hospital Network) who is also a 6th degree black belt. It is the only program of its kind in the country…low-impact work out with high-impact health benefits. The program consists of
- Qigong breathing exercises (10-15 minutes)…a very relaxing method of breathing combined with specific movement designed to increase oxygenation of the tissues and accelerate toxin elimination.
- Tai chi-like movements (30-40 minutes)…strengthen muscles, increase range of motion in the joints, stimulate circulation, boost immune function and enhance energy levels.
- Guided Imagery-Meditation (10-15 minutes)… relax the mind and body, initiate the production of endorphins and other anti-stress and immuno-stimulating hormones, accelerate the healing process.
Patients often report:
- Increased energy levels
- Better sleep
- Less pain
- Improved digestion
- Decreased stress
- Increased ability to handle the effects of chemo-and radiation therapy.
This program is offered in six-week segments, once per week, and is designed specifically for those undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Beginning and Advanced classes are available. There are no physical restrictions for the Medical Tai Chi© program.
This program is offered, free of charge, to patients of the Cancer Institute at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center. A Medical Tai Chi© and Cancer video is also available, through the Cancer Institute at the Alexian Brothers Medical Center.
